McGowan's Beach - day 3

Thursday 18 July 2013

McGowan’s Beach

Up early after a good night’s sleep – we walked down to the beach after a coffee and started fishing. Well guess what – Rob caught a fish. I don’t know who was the more surprised – Rob or the fish? It was a good sized Trevally or Skippy about 30cm in length. But that was it – no more for the morning. Anyway Rob cleaned it and it is ready for eating hopefully with some other fish. We had a breakfast of raisin toast and coffee. We spent the day relaxing – it feels like the first day where we did not have something that needed doing so it was welcomed. Paul finally got to read his book “1942” by Bob Wurth and Rob managed to look at some literature on the Gibb River. And in between doing nothing the boys all did their washing. Paul is the most meticulous of us all and regularly washes his clothing followed by Rob and then Lindsay. Lunch again was delicious but simple – the last of the salami, the tomato and lettuce.

We continued fishing in the late afternoon and Rob to his great skill managed to catch a small barracuda about 45cm in length. Now we have two fish in the larder. I decided to cook up a beef curry this afternoon given that we had the time.. I remember Lucy saying that I would need about 4 hours so cut up the beef and put it on the stove at 2pm. And yes by 6pm we had a delicious curry ready for eating along with some rice and yes some fresh steamed Kalumburu broccoli. Could not provision any potatoes or carrots from the local store so the broccoli was a good stand in. The standout movie tonight was “Hindenburg”.  A top movie with good ratings from the viewers. Part 2 will continue tomorrow.

We have also decided to stay an additional day at McGowan’s Beach . We will shorten our time at Home Valley Station by one day. We have enjoyed our time here and found the location to be ideal. Everyone is pretty relaxed and open to conversation. There would probably not be any more than 50 people in the camp and this entire wilderness around us. The water is blue, not tidal brown as expected, there are no mangroves in our vicinity and there are small sandy beaches between the rocks and no saltwater crocs (that we can see!). Picture perfect!
